A Finished UFO Or A Lost Mind?

I put my heart and my soul into my work and have lost my mind in the process
                                                                                                 Vincent van Gogh

Back in February 2013 I pattern tested this 7" foundation paper pieced heart for Juliet @The Tartankiwi (you can read about it here).

Of course, it's sat in my UFO pile ever since ... but no longer.  I ironed a piece of Pellon fusible fleece to the back of the heart and added a backing with a turned machine bound edge using the same fabulous Philip Jacobs Iris and Peony (Red) fabric that I've used for the heart centre on the front.  Yep those corners aren't perfectly mitred but at least it's finished and useable and I'm starting to think this could be a good mantra for me to live by - certainly if it's not something I'm selling!

I picked the fabric up on a trip to Liberty London - if you've never visited then take a look at the photos in my post here then put it on your Sewer's Bucket List.

Now it's an attractive table topper or wall hanging and could look equally good framed.

So one UFO's finished and unlike van Gogh I've even managed to keep my sanity I think - though my family might beg to differ ;D

Juliet's patterns are available now via her Etsy store and also her Payhip store.
Here's a look back at the patterns I've previously tested for Juliet.

Will You Walk A Little Faster?

"Will you walk a little faster?" said a whiting to a snail,
"There's a porpoise close behind us, and he's treading on my tail.

The Mock Turtle's Song, Lewis Carroll

Juliet from The Tartankiwi asked me to test another one of her fabulous Foundation Paper Piecing patterns, remember the 2 butterfly patterns and the heart pattern that I've tested before?

This time, it's a wonderful snail pattern.

What a great opportunity to use a fabric I've had stashed away - Tree Rings (Grey) by Martha Negley for Rowan Fabrics, it reminded me of snails crawling over our wood pile in our garden in England.

I miss our garden but I don't miss looking after it!  Here's a picture of one of my favourite areas in our garden

And here's another couple of photos of the finished block.

I used Kona Tangerine to define the shell and also to make the red berries pop on the Tree Rings fabric, and I've managed to incorporate some of my favourite lime green to make those colours sing.

I have an idea to include this block in a baby/child's quilt and I'll be adding a face to the snail but I want a bit longer to play around with expressions before committing to one.

The block measures 12" finished and Juliet will be putting the pattern out via her blog when all the testing is completed.

A Perfect Paper Pieced Valentine Heart

A few weeks ago Juliet of Tartankiwi put out another call for testers for a fab new Foundation Paper Pieced block 'Concentric Heart Pattern'.  Of course, I jumped straight in and today she made the pattern available to everyone.

Here's my version of the block

I've used Philip Jacobs Iris and Peony for the centre of the heart and a contrasting turquoise solid as an outline and then I pulled a selection of pink/peach/red/purple solids from my stash to finish the block.

As always the pattern was a cinch to make thanks to Juliet's great piecing design.
I'm yet to decide on a final piece to include the block in but I'll be sure to share it with you when it's done!

I'm sure this will be a very popular Valentine project.

You can get hold of the pattern for yourself here on Juliet's blog and be sure to take a look at the great interpretations Juliet's posted by the other two pattern testers, Angela @Sewing With Squeak and Carin @Ullharvan
