The Wrong Way To 'Like' A Facebook Business Page

Are you going the wrong way about liking Facebook pages?  I was.
Don't know what I'm talking about?  Let me explain ...

Like most of us bloggers I have a Facebook Business Page - you can find me here @made by ChrissieD.

Here's how to 'like' a Facebook page the wrong way:

If you have your own fb business page and you've 'liked' my fb page while working on fb as your business page then you didn't really 'like' my page at all and I don't have a clue that you've ever been so kind as to click 'like'.

I've had my fb business page for 2 years now and during that time I've been happily clicking 'like' on all your lovely pages and enjoying reading about you in my feed.  Just like me, what most of us don't realise is that if we click 'like' with our fb business page hat on then this 'like' doesn't count and not only does it not increase the 'like' count for the other business but the business page owner isn't notified of your 'like' either.

I only heard this information nugget last week, did my research and discovered it was true.

Here's how you should be 'liking':

The only way to make a fb business page 'like' count and to increase the 'like' numbers on someone else's fb business page is to click 'like' with your fb personal page hat on.

Issues I have with 'liking' correctly:

1:  I've been trying hard to run my business on facebook separately to my personal fb page and I've enjoyed having both a business news feed and a personal news feed.  This last week I have given in and gone through my business 'liked' list and replicated all my 'likes' on to my personal fb page.  I've no good answer to the news feed issue - my suggestions are to either be very selective with who you choose to 'like' or to hide news from anyone that you're not so keen to see regularly, neither method is terribly satisfactory.

2:  Most of us don't know the real names of the other bloggers we follow so how will each of you know it's me visiting when you see a 'like' from Chris Dodsley - I've got round this by leaving a comment on the page that looks like this:

This way my fb business page link also appears in my comment and you can click through and return the 'like' if you want to.

The good news:

Within minutes, actually more like seconds, of hitting those personal 'likes' the 'likes' started to flood back, it's quite heartening really to see how willing people are to reciprocate the 'like' when they know you're following them too.

Take time to leave a few likes now and again and it helps us all to be more visible.

Please feel free to leave your own experiences, hints and tips in the comments section below and share my post and spread the word.

Let's Start At The Very Beginning - 5 Things To Share With You

I've lots of news which I figure I can break down into 5 main areas so where to start? Why at the very beginning of course!

1. I'm A Giveaway Winner
If you're following me on facebook you'll already know that last week Kati @from the blue chair emailed me to say that I was a winner in her giveaway - 10 Pure Elements fat quarters on the way to me courtesy of Julie @The Intrepid Thread - how happy was I and all I did was tell her that my current fave fabric is Robert Kaufman Essex Linen!!!   Well the fat quarters have arrived and they're really pretty gorgeous aren't they?

Thank you Kati and Julie :)

Oh and if you want to catch up with me via facebook just click here and hit 'like' to get updates sent to your facebook wall :)

2. NYC Metro Mod Quilt Guild
Last Saturday I went over to my NYC Metro Mod Quilt Guild meeting and there were lots of great quilts in our 'Show & Tell' if you want to take a look.  We were all given Guild pin badges, which I proudly wore all day - well I actually forgot all about it, wore it to my Film Club meetup and then when I met Flicky for dinner she immediately told me to remove it as we took our seats in the restaurant!

I have a bit of Guild news too - Victoria @VictoriaFindlayWolfeQuilts and Encyclopedia @CocktailsandThread are stepping down as our President and Secretary but we have chosen two fabulous replacements - Lisa @TheRedHeadedMermaid as President and David (I don't think David blogs but I do know he reads my blog so hopefully he'll correct me if I'm wrong!!!) will be our next Secretary.

So a sad 'bye' to V & E and a big 'hi' to L & D :)

3. Mum's Birthday Apron
Have to tell you all that Mum's Birthday Apron was the biggest success ever.  She's loves it so much and wore it all day but it had to be practically prised off her later in the day when my Aunt and Uncle became concerned that she might even wear it out that evening to go dancing with friends! ;)

Just to clarify that's my daughter, Flicky modelling the apron, not my Mum!!!

4. Etsy Shop
I really need to get to grips with starting my Esty Shop, so many people keep asking me when it's going to be ready and the answer is that I keep getting involved with doing/making other things and not making time to get my business started.  My great friend Wendy has offered to give me a weekly kick up the backside which is just what I need to focus and motivate me.  I've promised her that from this week I'm not going to work on anything else until I've got my internet shop up and running.

So I've started out by sewing my new labels into the pile of quilts I've already made to sell and I've made another baby/lap quilt to add to the pile.  This one's fmq'd with a floral design and I've handtied the centre of each flower.  Here's a sneak peek:

5. Hoboken Walk
Two weeks ago it was snowing and freezing here but this week it's quite a different story with the temperature today up to 29C/84.2F.  I was out and about early this morning taking a walk and thought I'd share some photos with you of where I live on the Hudson River at the Hoboken/Jersey City border.  I've shown you photos of the Jersey City waterfront before and today it's Hoboken's turn.

Pier A Park, Hoboken - the trees were planted as a memorial to 9/11 victims
1907 Hoboken Terminal
View down to 1 WTC
Erie, Lackwanna Ferry Terminal and view down to Jersey City
View over to the bottom of the High Line, the Meatpacking District and the Empire State Building
Inside the Railroad Terminal Building (still under renovation after Hurricane Sandy)
The fabulous Railroad Terminal Building Tiffany Ceiling
Laying the controversial gas pipeline over to Manhattan
Newport to Hoboken Waterfront Walkway
Newport Green Park & Beach, built last year next door to my apartment building

I hope you've enjoyed catching up with all my news and taking a look at my part of the world

Project Update And Shout Out For The Agitprop Quilter

At my LQS with my Double Irish Chain quilt top

Quick update on my two ongoing projects:

Here's a photo taken at my Manhattan LQS of me and my Double Irish Chain quilt.  Need to order some white batting before I can sandwich the quilt though - I think the white blocks are sooo very white that the natural cream coloured batting that I usually use may dirty its appearance.

Making good progress with my Dad's Memory Quilt - I've finished half of the top sheet and 3/4 of the backing sheet.  Regular followers will know the drill by now

"I can't post any photos of my Dad's Memory Quilt on my blog as it's a present for my Mum and she wants it to be a surprise so again I've posted some photos to my facebook page as my Mum doesn't have facebook and can't see it there."

If you want to see how it's looking, just click this link :D

I also want to give a special shout out to my good friend Maren (previously referred to as 'M' as part of that mysterious and unspoken blogging etiquette) who has this week decided to take the plunge and go 'live' with her quilting blog.  Be sure to take a look as she has such a witty and wry writing style which is incredibly refreshing!

Two Quilts and Making Progress

This last week I've made great progress with my Double Irish Chain quilt and also my Dad's Memory Quilt.

The Double Irish Chain quilt top is now finished and I've also pieced the back using some left over strips from the quilt top.  The rest of the quilt back will be more of the Oval Elements fabric in Petal Pink by Pat Bravo but, as I want to keep the ovals all running in the same direction, I need to buy more so I'll pick this up when I go to the final class at my LQS in Manhattan this Thursday.  Now I've added the borders the quilt is much larger than I'd realised.  The book said I'd be making a 50" x 70" quilt but this turns out to be the size of the Irish Chain section without borders (if I'd put my thinking cap on I'd have realised this - 5 x 10" blocks = 50" but I didn't) so the finished size is actually going to be about 66" x 87".

As regular followers will know, I can't post any photos of my Dad's Memory Quilt on my blog as it's a present for my Mum and she wants it to be a surprise so again I've posted some photos to my facebook page as my Mum doesn't have facebook and can't see it there.  If you want to see how it's looking, just click this link :D

So Much To Do And Not Enough Hours In A Day!

I've spent the last two days learning how to do all this stuff, setting up my facebook page and this blog and linking my accounts on facebook, Pinterest and Ravelry. It's quite a task and really all I want to do is crack on with my latest quilt project - I'm very, very excited about this one, it's top secret for now but over the next few weeks I'll be able to tell you all about it. Bear with me for a while, I need to get my act together but I promise I'll be posting lots of photos with my posts very, very soon!
