Happy Birthday Mum

Today is my Mum's birthday so I've made and posted to her this reversible apron beautifully modelled here by Flicky.

Here's a closer look at some of the detail:

buttonhole adjustable neck tie

long bow ties to allow for back or front fastening

pocket frills and bias tape bound edges

embroidered pocket edge and my small label detail.

frilled pockets lined with the Liberty apron backing fabric.

And here's the back of this reversible apron

front fastened bow

appliqued name detail just in case Mum forgets who she is ;)

my large label detail with care instructions on the reverse.

And another shot of Flicky who was soooo cold during this photo shoot.  It was minus something with an icy March wind but she wore the light jeans and t-shirt so the apron could be the star of the show and she kept hurrying off the balcony back into my bedroom to try to get warm again - what a trooper!!!

I'm really pleased with how it turned out and hopefully Mum will love it too.

Happy Birthday Mum xxx

  1. Wow, it's lovely. Did you use a pattern? or make this one up yourself.
I love the long tie and the little details.

    1. Hi Liz, I made the pattern up myself and it's had such a good response I'm wondering if I could replicate it for a tute, we'll see! :)

    1. Hi Cynthia, Mum does love it and she contemplated keeping it for 'best' and then decided it was made to be worn so kept it on all day! When I spoke to her at teatime it had all the markings of a good day's use on it already and I've said she has to tell me the truth about how well it washes so that I know if it's okay to use the liberty fabrics alongside the Essex linen again in future.

It's funny that you share the same birthday as my Mum, I hope you enjoyed your day as much as she did - you can tell me about it next week! :)

    1. Thank you Nana, my starting point was the Liberty backing fabric as this was the closest to a purple (Mum's favourite colour) that Purl Soho had in stock and the others were chosen to compliment it. :)

    1. Thanks so much for asking. I made this one up as I went along though it's had such a good response that I'm wondering if I could backtrack and create a pattern/tute for it. I've got some 'must do's' for the next month (like promising myself I'm finally going to set up my own Etsy shop!) but I think I'll be coming back to this one later in the year. :)

    1. Hi Gertie, I was flying by the seat of my pants a bit making this and kept thinking up new details and then having to work around how they'd fit with the bits I'd already sewn - the apron ties actually come out through buttonholes that I had to put into the edge binding to the ties could be inserted inside the apron rather than attached on the surface (if you get what I mean) - I did think I was being a bit of star when I managed to make that one work!!!

I'm in love with my labels too, though I say so myself and they make everything feel much more 'professional' (she types the word 'professional' while giggling and then thinks she should have a lot more confidence in herself!). Anyway Mum is over the moon with it which is all I could have hoped for and more so I'm very, very happy :)
