By Special Request: iPad Case + Cable Storage

iPad Case and Cable Storage by www.madebyChrissieD.com

Earlier this year, during one of our weekly Skype chats, my Mum did something she's never done before, she asked me to make something for her.  More specifically, she asked me to make a case for her iPad, something like my daughter, Flicky, had made for her Mac using one of my tutes.

and here is my tute if you'd like to make one like it for yourself.

Mum had a couple more requests - she wants to carry the case under her arm but a wrist strap, so she can't drop it, would be great.  She needs room for her iPad and her iPad keyboard.

I put my thinking cap on straight away, it was only a week until I was travelling over to Scotland for Flicky's graduation and I knew I wanted to make the cover and give it to Mum then.

Obviously, the case had to be purple, Mum loves purple, not just a little bit but a whole lot.  Longstanding readers may remember this blog post I wrote about her back in 2014.

No time for fabric shopping, I pulled some fabrics from my stash and shared them on Instagram and gathered opinions.  To be honest, I wasn't happy with them though.

The very next day a miracle happened, my May Cotton Cuts subscription box arrived.

Just look at that extra freebie gift the Cotton Cuts girls brought back from Quilt Market - a purple fat quarter!

I unrolled it and was thrilled to see the detail on this Tula Pink Spirit Animal fabric.

Back to the drawing board, I pulled new fabrics from my stash (and the majority were from previous Cotton Cut subscription boxes!)

I was much happier with these, so the next step was to create a mock-up.  I often work like this, part of my art and design training, this way I can best consider sizes, colours, prints, usability, practicality and develop ideas for extra features, etc.

Happy with the outside, I decided to add D-rings and so Mum can attach both a wrist strap and/or a body strap with clip swivel hooks which meets her request for making the case easier to carry and more secure.  She doesn't always take her power cable with her so I decided to make a detachable power cable storage pouch that can also double as storage for the wrist and body strap.

A dividing section with the case will allow Mum to separate her iPad and her keyboard and prevent scratches on the screen.

And how fab is this pic of Mum at Flicky's Graduation?  All day, Mum reminded me of a purple Mary Poppins.  You see, I really did need to make that iPad case a purple iPad case!!!

  4. Your Mum looks wonderful in her purple (and very like you) and the iPad pouch is perfect. I love your tutorials and am ever grateful to you for your Quilt As You Go sashing that I use whenever I make a quilt (which isn't so often these days). Thank you for your generosity and skills.

    1. You've made my day Julie, in more ways than one. Fab to hear that you use my QAYG technique, I don't mind having those lines of machine quilting visible, I far prefer that to the technique of hand sewing those back sashings in place! I see my Mum all the time in Flicky, to me they're so alike and funnily enough, I see my Mum looking back at me in the mirror more and more these days too. Have a great week :D

  5. Loved today's story and well done to Flicky on her graduation. We went to Scotland in August for 4 days, for my birthday, but it rained a lot of the time. We went to Newquay in Cornwall in October and it was perfect weather for the time of year. National Holidays do great cheap 4 day breaks :)

    1. Thanks Lesley, hoping you're keeping well. Have to say, it rained at Flicky's graduation too, but it gave my Mum a good reason to use her purple umbrella! Can't beat a short break, can you? You've certainly covered the length and breadth of Britain with your trips in the last couple of months!

  7. This is really useful, especially the little bag for the cable. I've ruined more than one cable due to bad storage, so I definitely need one of those bags. I love the fabrics you used too. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!

  8. Oh! Thanks for sharing this at TGIFF. I'll be getting an Ipad at some point in the next months, and this is the PERFECT tote for it. I really love the detachable shoulder strap, inner divider, and clip-on cord pouch. It's so pretty in these fabrics, too.
