Story Of You - My October 2013 NYC Mod Quilt Guild Bee Block

Time for my latest NYC Mod Quilt Guild Bee Block.

This month's Queen Bee is Maria and she sent out a simple package containing a piece of Kaufman Essex Linen Yarn dyed Black, instructions and templates to make a block based on the 'Gong Show' quilt by Lesly @Stitch Literate and the most wonderful request for making a block yet!  Maria asked us to create what she is calling her 'Story Of You" quilt, using her given fabric as the block background we're to use "a favorite color, a "so very you" color combination, a couple of loved fabric prints, something that represents who you are as a quilter, or even more so, a fabric lover"  to make up the block.

I thought long and hard about Maria's request (so long and hard that it's actually now November and not October!!!).  I don't have a favourite colour and my fabric choices are wide and eclectic with no definitive 'favourite' so I just wasn't sure how to represent myself in this block.  Just when I thought I'd go crazy thinking this thing through and trialling possible fabric choices only to decide they weren't so much of a 'favourite' after all, I hit on the answer - my 'Story Of You' block should represent the first quilt I ever made, the one that started this quilting and sewing madness that is now my life, it's Flicky's quilt and you can read all about here.

So that's exactly what I've done, I've used three fabrics from my very first quilt and here it is, my story of me 'Story Of You' Block.

The fabrics in descending order are:

As always you can check out all the blocks that our Bee make for Maria on my Quilty - Story Of You Block Pinterest Board - I'll add more pins as each person in the Bee posts photos of their finished blocks and you can see my NYC Mod Quilt Guild Post here too.

  1. Love your colours (orange being a favourite of mine)!!! Great idea you had to go 'back to your roots'. Such an interesting challenge - immediately I started thinking about what I would use, it really is fun to think how one expresses self in fabric.

    1. This block took me forever to decide what fabrics to include and my next Bee Block has given me a similar headache, though I think I've last night come to a decision about that one. My Bee certainly like to pose challenges!!!

  2. Wow - you did an amazing job matching up your prints in that bottom section! I love the fabrics you ended up using.

    1. Can't really take credit for the matching - I just cut a rectangle in half to make the 2 pieces and once they were sewn back together the pattern didn't 'suffer' from losing a 1/2" in the centre seam. The top fabric is the same but the white dot fabrics doesn't work so well - makes me wish now I had paid more attention!!! :D

    1. That is just so lovely of you to say Lorna, I made a Drunkard's Path Quilt about 20 months ago, not my favourite block but surprising how quick you can get at churning those curves out and how with practice you can even perfect it just using 1 pin to hold the centre of each curve!!!

    1. Thanks, it was a fun easy block to do, once I'd decided on my fabrics and I'm loving how all the blocks are looking as they're coming together on my Pinterest Board. That fabric is Kaufman Essex Linen Yarn dyed Black :D
