HELP!!! My daughter has gone over to the dark side - she's bought herself a Mac. Before she bought it, on an afternoon trip to Chelsea Market, she made a quick diversion and took me to their meeting place - I didn't want to be there, I begged to leave, "just look how beautiful they are" she said but I kept my sunglasses firmly in place, "touch one, pick it up, feel how light it is" - I took a step back towards the door. Admittedly the air conditioning was icy cold and very welcome on one of the hottest days of the year but I wanted to get back to the warmth of the Manhattan streets.

In need of a cup of tea we nipped into Think on 8th Ave, OMG they had me surrounded, at every table in the place there were people using Macs - not a single Windows laptop in sight. "It's a cult" I heard myself saying "and you're joining them - you're going over to the dark side."
That night the deal was done, the die was cast. 'It' arrived and she was so thrilled I had to snap a pic of her opening the box.
She's called 'it' Moriarty and I love that she did - 'it' really is the arch-enemy of several people in her life including her Dad and me. You see my husband and I are both ex-Digital Equipment Company (DEC) employees, Deccies through and through and when you've spent many years on that side of the great computer divide, it's very hard to migrate to the 'other'!
Let's not forget though that above all else I am Flicky's Mother so when she told me she needed a cover to protect Moriarty from scratches I couldn't help but oblige. She had a rummage through my stash and chose Pink Echino Birds And Berries Cherry, Kaffe Fassett Oriental Trees and Bear Essentials by P&B Textiles alongside a lime green zipper.
And here's the result - a quilted, zipped cover for Moriarty the MacBook Air:
I'm still not a fan of Moriarty but even I have to admit that she's right he really does look quite beautiful in his new cover and the gorgeous Echino pink does at least help to brighten Flicky's dark side!!!

HAHAHAAH, I love this. We think of Macs that way here, too :)
ReplyDeleteI love the cover!! I have both for work - a pc and mac....I will say I love my Mac air book great for travelling instead of the brick :-)
ReplyDeleteThe hubby is a PC/Windows guy through and through, so we have little debates all the time.
I use Macs in my new job at The City Quilter now too - had no choice, oh dear! I'm still struggling using my ipod that I've had for years, can't get to grips with the rotating something to control the menu! :)
DeleteSUCH good choices for fabric she makes- that 'dark' daughter of yours hee hee!!! I love how the Kaffe matches the birdies.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you noticed that Lisa - that was an 'on purpose' colour choice and the green zip matches the birds too :)
DeleteI'm not a Mac fan either - when I used Pete's mum's one I felt like a bit of a wally as nothing seemed to be intuitive! But I agree that they are SOOO smart to look at. And now Flicky's is even more perfect with that beautiful cover. I love the birds they are gorgeous, and the green zip makes a real statement. Lucky, lucky girl! x
ReplyDeleteGreat choice, Flicky!!! You'll LOVE your new MacBook and in no time at all, you'll be fending off the rest of the family, who'll want to use it. Make them eat their words first... LOL!!! Chrissie, I've only ever owned Macs (a lot of them) and my job for the last 15 years saw me setting up and maintaining a few Mac Servers and a network of 150+ Macs, with a dozen or so PCs. I always found the Macs more intuitive... I suppose it's what you're used to. A beautiful cover for a beautiful computer!!!
ReplyDeleteLol I don't have much to say about the Mac! Did I just sat that word! But I love the cover.
ReplyDeleteI love that cover ... and I love my Mac! I made the switch about five years ago and I've never looked back!! Go, Flicky!!
ReplyDeleteI"m afraid that I have to say I'm with Flicky - I love my Mac!!!!! Such a lovely case you made for her too - Moriaty will be the smartest dressed Mac ever, if not a little gender confused...... ;) x
ReplyDeleteI did think that Sonia, when she chose the pink - gave me a little giggle though, how daft is that?! :)
DeleteGot to say that when we bought a laptop before we moved to NZ, we deliberately bought a Mac. We had never had a Mac before, but we bought it for a very good reason. It was one of the very few models of laptop that has a worldwide warranty... Not sure if its still the case, but if it is then she made a logical choice considering the pending move to St Andrews :-)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea about that Juliet, one for Simon to look into though so thanks for mentioning :)
DeleteHa ha! It is a beautiful bright cover - perfect for the little evil machine :)
ReplyDeleteI am a PC user too and have wondered about a Mac but couldn't bear all the faff for converting all my files over.
Gorgeous cover! I'm a mac lover - sorry! They are just so user friendly and so easy for non techies ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, yep, definitely the dark side. Pretty cover, though. :)
ReplyDeleteYou had me in stitches, and I had to read your post aloud to my husband! I, too, work on both Mac's and PC's , so like both, but I love the pouch you made for the Mac. I would love to make one for my iPad!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad to hear that, I've been laughing myself at the whole situation - quite amazing how polarised we can be over a piece of technology!!! I've just had to start using a Mac in my new job at The City Quilter so I might be eating my words yet! Glad you like the pouch, it would be so easy to make one for an iPad. :)
DeleteLovely fabric, lovely cover!
ReplyDeleteLove that cover and the pop of the lime green zipper is awesome!
ReplyDeleteShe definitely look very happy! And that is such a sweet cover to go with it!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

Oooh, so cute! I love the fabric choices, and I totally want one for my computer. (I won't tell you what kind. You won't like it.) :)
ReplyDeleteSo funny! And I completely understand. My dad (and both grandfathers and several other family members) worked for IBM forever. When my creative brother switched to a Mac in the 90s, we ridiculed him mercilessly. Now, I'm sorry to tell you, we are all Mac people. ~sigh~ It's easier to just give in.
ReplyDeleteThe cover is great and thanks for your post.
Love the Echino - it makes a great project! Thanks for linking up to TGIFF!
ReplyDeleteHehehe. It is really hard to be loyal, hubby has an I pad and I'm getting very tempted myself.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful case, Chrissie! And now to add my bit to the Mac/PC argument, I've used both and like both but I will say that when I was blogging on a PC, it kept getting slower and slower and s-l-o-w-e-r and nothing I could do would make it run like it did at first. Found out it was all the internet hopping I was doing. I got a MacBook Pro to replace it four years ago and haven't had a bit of problem since - and as an added benefit, Mac people are so happy with their Macs they don't spend time writing viruses and malware! So I think she made a great choice!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, whoop whoop for a great finish!!
I love the case! Great fabric choices! I have been a diehard PC user after a top of the line failed on me a few years ago... but then I got to play with the new MacBook Air... and I was hooked again. Mine just arrived this weekend and I am loving it!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous case - great choices for the fabric!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

Hilarious post! You were so kind to make such a pretty case for your daughter, but methinks you may have had an ulterior motive; you wanted to cover it up!
