Marmite + Vegemite - Which Camp Are You?

Marmite + Vegemite - Which Camp Are You?

As you're reading this I'm in Australia, I've already visited Melbourne, done a trip to Brisbane and now I'm in Queensland before heading to Sydney.

I've brought these two cushion covers with me.  They're a gift for two super special friends that I'm staying with in Queensland.

Remember last June I gifted this quilt to Wendy and Kim on their return home to live in Australia?

At that time, I thought I wouldn't see them again until next November when we have a business trip organised to Aus.  Words can't describe how delighted I was when my husband, Simon, told me we'd be heading down under not only next November but this month too.

Cushion covers are an ideal gift to take with me, something to keep and create a memory and not tricky to carry in my case - I can purchase pillow forms once I'm there.

VEGEMITE CUSHION

A long time ago Wendy, who I met in a class when we were both learning to quilt, gave me some fabric scraps.  The scraps are the Australian flag and it seemed like a good idea to use these along with coordinating scraps to create an improv piece.

The quilting thread is Aurifil #4663 Baby Blue Eyes.

I've created the back using fabric that means a lot to me - it's left over from making the border for my first ever quilt, made for my daughter, Flicky.

The bottom fabric is gorgeous, I spent ages trying to remember where in the world I'd bought it.  I scoured my Exploring - The World page and couldn't find a reference to it and then the lightbulb went on - I bought it right here in Manhattan at Gotham Quilts - yep, there's plenty fab places to shop right here on my doorstep too!  It's Lonni Rossi, Concentric Circles in Black.

Wendy gave me these scraps too - red, white, black and grey prints.  I've pieced them using joining strips of red and black solids.

I've quilted using Aurifil #2600 Dove.

The frayed selvedge edge of this Paris cotton linen fabric makes a great design detail on the cushion front.

The upper back is a piece of fabric remaining from a reversible apron I made for my son, Joe.  I've teamed it with Robert Kaufman black Essex Yarn Dyed Linen.

If you're liking my hidden zippers, you can make your own using my Updated & Even Easier Hidden Zipper Tute.  I've also removed the pointy corners using my No More Empty Corners (aka Bunny Ears) tute.

I hope Wendy and Kim love them and that they'll be a lasting memory of my first trip to visit them down under in their new home.

MARMITE + VEGEMITE - WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
The answer is I don't like either - I'm firmly rooted in the 'hate it' camp for both 😝

Marmite, since 1902, is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing.  A sticky, dark brown food paste with a distinctive powerful flavour, which is extremely salty.  This distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it."  The product's name has entered British English as a metaphor for something that is an acquired taste or tends to polarise opinions.

Vegemite is a thick, very dark brown Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives.  It was developed by Cyril Percy Callister in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922.

Enjoy one of my fave old 'I hate Marmite' British TV adverts.

  1. Oh I am so Vegemite. Sometimes my kids like to play tricks and give me breakfast in bed with Marmite. I work it out everytime.

  6. Nowadays, Vegemite (less sugar in it) - growing up (in southern New Zealand) we had both in the cupboard; I would have Marmite if my toast was hot, and Vegemite if my toast was cold (crazy huh?) Great pillows - beautiful work!

  10. I love both these cushion covers and I LOVE marmite. It's a staple food in our house. Great for your vitamin b12 levels too.
I have an Australian friend who tried to tell me Vegemite was the same so when she brought some back after a trip home I gave it a whirl - NO, NO.NO it is not the same at all!

  17. Don't think I have ever eaten both but Vegemite in the cushion tastes - something about the blues speaks to me. Great ideas for presents! Thanks for linking up to TGIFF.

I prefer Vegemite in both the food and the pillow cover. You did a great job on both of them, and they make a very thoughtful, easy-to-travel-with gift. ~smile~ Roseanne
