Modern With A Twist: Drunkard's Path

Modern With A Twist: Drunkard's Path

When Benartex asked me what block I'd like to work with for their Modern With A Twist article in their latest Modern By The Yard e-zine, it was an easy ask - it had to be Drunkard's Path.

Modern With A Twist is a great, regular feature in the free e-zine - you get to see an example of how the classic block looks, and then three designers put a modern twist on it using one of Benartex's current fabric collections.

Why Drunkard's Path?

I've worked with the Drunkard's Path block several times before, and you can read about two of my earlier DP quilts here and here. The blue quilt is one of the first quilts I ever made. We learnt curves in a 2-hour class at The City Quilter in Manhattan, and I turned up 7 days later with this finished quilt - on their Facebook page, I was credited with being an over-achiever ðŸ˜‡.

I've also created a reversible improv mini-quilt using Drunkard's Path that I have yet to share. This mini was displayed at the 2016 Quilt and Sewing Fest of New Jersey - part of the NYC Metro Mod Quilters Guild Paintchip Challenge exhibit.

I've made no secret of wanting to explore the block further, so this was an excellent opportunity.

Fabric Choice

I chose to work with the Benartex Fandangle fabric collection by Christa Watson of Christa Quilts

And stayed within a monochrome turquoise/teal palette, teamed with a neutral light grey.

My Modern Drunkard's Path Block

This is the block I've created. I've written a short piece for the e-zine about the block and how my colour placement affects the block design.

My Drunkard's Path Quilt Pattern

So this is how it looks when it's made up into a quilt using a straightforward 'all the blocks in the same direction' layout.

The block is incredibly versatile; I've had so much fun working with it.

  4. This is so cool. I'm always amazed and what different patterns appear almost by magic when you change a block up just a little.
