Have you heard, there's a new quilt book out; Stash Statement by Kelly Young of My Quilt Infatuation? It's Week 9 of the book's Blog Hop and my turn to give you a peek inside the book.
Stash Statement Book Blog Hop
Kelly shares various methods of creating improv scrap fabric and each of the 12 patterns has a recommended improv method to get you started - but you can also use any of the methods as you wish.
As with most quilting books, Kelly assumes the reader has some level of sewing knowledge but does include basic tips and techniques. The book is then divided into 3 sections:
Section 1: Play With Color
Planned colour placement working in single colour improv sections
Section 2: Grab And Sew
Random improv sections with a more restful neutral or self-colour background
Section 3: Improv In The Background
a complete reverse to Section 2 and, as the title suggests, neutral or self-colour piecing on an improv background
Skill Level and Quilt Sizes
Kelly suggests 11 quilts in the book are suitable for a confident beginner while the final College Prep quilt is intermediate. The quilts range in length and width from 52-1/2" to 72-1/2" made with blocks varying in size from 6" to 24" and 4" x 54" strips.
Bloom Chicka Boom
For the blog hop, I chose to work with the Bloom Chicka Boom pattern in Section 3. I have, however, changed it up by mixing techniques from sections 1 and 3 of the book working each block section in single defined colours with an improv solid background and improv print colour piecing (Section 1) and finishing with an improv print background border (Section 3).
