The Very Hungry Caterpillar Quilt

Making a child's quilt based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar book by Chris Dodsley @madebyChrissieD.com

Back in September Simon and I were invited to a first birthday party - here's our invitation.

In my stash was just the thing for the perfect birthday gift -
fabric from The Very Hungry Caterpillar collection by Eric Carle for Andover Fabrics.

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR QUILT

The Quilt Story
So what happens when the very hungry caterpillar has eaten his way through all that food on the quilt top?

Let's flip the quilt over and find out...

... he turns into a beautiful butterfly and flies away

The Book
Not familiar with the story?  Author, Eric Carle, reads the book to you in this fab Puffin Books video on Youtube, it's only 2-1/2 mins long and well worth a watch.

and was gifted by Chris + Simon Dodsley to Finn Lam on his first birthday

Though I say it myself, I'm loving that I've inserted the butterfly section into the backing fabric using a Y-seam rather than by piecing the backing.

  1. What a wonderful gift. I hope you made the parents promise to let Finn use the quilt and not just "save" it.

    1. Indeed, I said those very words to them - all my quilts are to be used, I can't bear the thought of them being 'saved' :D

  4. Absolutely love it! Great idea to have the caterpillar on one side and butterfly on the other. This story has a special place in my heart - we read it daily to our son while still in the womb, continuing to read it daily to him while he was in his isolette (after being delivered 12 weeks prem). I think, 15 years later, I can almost still recite it off by heart!
