On The Bright Side Quilt

Benartex sent me some Burlap Brights to work with and I knew just what I wanted to do with them...

Remember this On The Bright Side block I made for the Burlap Brights Block Hop?
I shared the tute with you here.

Then I turned it into a pillow cushion and shared the tute with you here.

...well, this time, I wanted to turn that block into a quilt and here's my EQ7 design for it:

So I added two shades of grey and a white solid to the Burlap Bright fat quarters Benartex sent for me to work with.

After I cut all the pieces out I played around with colour layout and decided to go with layout 3 - I feel the tonal weights are balanced more equally in this layout.

It really didn't take long to piece the quilt top

and very soon I had a finished quilt approx 46" x 46".

At the centre of each block, I've covered buttons in the white solid and sewn them through to the back of the quilt where they are held in place with another backing button.

Materials used for Quilt Top:
Burlap Brights by Benartex Fabrics Inc
2 greys and 1 white solids
9 self-cover buttons

Materials used for Quilt Back:
Checkmate - Loominous collection by Anna Maria Horner for Free Spirit Fabrics
Stellar Dove by Andover Fabrics

I've quilted the front of the quilt 1/8" from the ditch on all white sections of the quilt.  On the quilt top I've used Aurifil #2024 - White and in the bottom bobbin on the quilt back I've used Aurifil #2600 - Dove.  For the hand quilted binding I've used a No 8 Silver Grey Perle Cotton.

I'm really thrilled with how the quilt looks finished - and it's a great lap size quilt.

  7. Beautiful quilt. I would love one to cover my kind sized bed. Hmmmm...

I've never seen quilt stitches in the binding before. What is your binding technique? I love the look.

    1. Normally for hand quilted binding I machine sew the binding to the back of the quilt and then hand sew the binding to the quilt top using a running stitch. I take my stitches through the quilt top and the batting but not through the quilt backing so they're not visible on that side. On this quilt I used the quilt backing to bind the quilt - trim the backing larger than the quilt top and batting on all sides then fold the backing inwards and over the quilt top to create the binding. Hand stitch into place the same way as before - Chris :D

    1. Thanks Christine. I love visibly hand stitching binding into place, especially on a hand quilted quilt and it doesn't take any longer than invisibly hand stitching - Chris :D

  21. Are the burlap brights actually quilting cotton, but just look like burlap? I like the hand quilting detail on the binding, really sweet.

    1. They are 100% quilting cotton Lisa, completely flat. To me they don't look like Burlap, more a tone on tone with a tiny, even and all over speckle effect. Imagine if you took a blue fabric, placed burlap over it and spray painted a darker blue paint through the burlap so you had an impression of the burlap's holes on the original fabric. You can see the effect best in the second photo in the post showing all the fabrics Benartex sent to me.
