To Boldly Go - A Trekkie's Travel Bag

Even men need travel bags, and masculine laminated cotton isn't always easy to find.  For Christmas 2013 I was on a travel/wash bag roll and everyone in my family received one as a Christmas gift, including the men.  This is the travel bag I made for my husband, Simon.

The outside laminate is NYC Subway map - on licence from MTA and available only from The City Quilter in Manhattan where I teach.  Available in 100% cotton and also as a laminate it's a really great print - I've used it for quilts

and gifts.

So the laminate was a perfect choice for Simon's travel bag...

... and inside I included some fabric from one of his all time favourite TV series - Star Trek by Camelot Cottons.

I fussy cut the fabric so The Enterprise was as visible as possible.  I've turned the wash bag inside out here so you can see just how that lining looks!

And then the co-ordinating tissue cover and yes that too has Star Trek lining.

Over the last 12 months, Simon has travelled across the world pretty much weekly and the travel bag has boldly gone with him - it's safe to say it's been a huge hit.

You might be interested in also seeing another masculine laminate fabric I've used for wash bags, I've posted about it here: A Good Snapshot Or A Total Wash Out?

The Tula Team - Tissues, Toiletries & Tote

Back in November 2013 I shared this Tula Pink bag with you - you can read all about it here:

I made the tote to give to my son's partner, Ana, for Christmas 2013 and I also made coordinating accessories - a toiletries bag and a tissue cover.  If you're a regular reader you might have guessed by now that I never shared the accessories as what follows are more of those photos that have just resurfaced when I recently cleared out one of my cameras.

Fabrics used:
Topiary, Eye Drops and Spencer Stripe from the Parisville collection - all by Tula Pink for Free Spirit.

I love how the lining fabric is visible through the outer tissue cover, those fabrics work so well together.

Have you ever made something, forgotten about it then found a photo a while after?
There're even more photos of other makes on the camera, fun looking back at everything, though!

Exploring Upper East Side - Pins & Needles, NYC

It's about time I introduced you to another of my favourite fabric stores in Manhattan - Pins & Needles on the Upper East Side owned by the lovely Rachel Low.

Carrying all types of fabric, trims, patterns and notions - for quilting, home dec, crafts and garment making, Pins & Needles has everything you could need for all your projects.

I took these phone pics on a visit way back last May and since then Rachel has expanded the store to include the new P&N Studio for classes and workshops and available to hire for meetings and events.

Rachel has just published her first book too.

If you're visiting Manhattan and exploring the Upper East Side do drop in, say "hi" and tell them I sent you - and if you're lucky Molly, the store dog, may be there too!!!

1045 Lexington Avenue, Second Floor, Manhattan (above Joe's Coffee, between 74th & 75th St - take the 6 train to 77th St).

For details of other fabric, yarn, trim and notion stores that I've visited around the world along with the NYC stores I love, exhibitions and events I've attended and wonderful people I've been lucky to meet click the links below or in my sidebar :D
