Hurricane Sandy

View from my window at 11.00 am, Monday, 29 October 2012 - the Hudson River is already level with the walkways

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your messages and good wishes, it means a lot to me and my family :)

Regular followers will know that I live in Jersey City on the Hudson River by Hoboken station and next door to the Holland Tunnel ventilation tower.  It's currently low tide and the water is already up level with the Hudson River walkways outside my apartment block. They tell us that the hurricane will reach us this evening at the same time as a full moon high tide and possibly along with a cold front coming down from Canada - they're calling it Frankenstorm. We're already at the sea levels of Hurricane Irene last year and expecting water to rise by up to another 11 feet by tonight.

The lower floors of my building have had mandatory evacuation but we're on the 23rd so we didn't have to leave. We've cleared our balcony and moved furniture away from our windows which are tight shut and our blinds are closed.  We're going to sleep in our hall tonight as there's no windows there and it's closer to the centre of the building. We've got food and water and we've filled the baths so we can flush toilets and wash should we lose water to the building.

As long as the electricity holds I'll keep posting on Facebook. x

  1. Crikey! Have everything crossed for the best possible outcome Chrissie - electricity and water holding up I hope. Hold tight!

    1. Hi Gertie, thanks so much, worst will be this evening. Our doorman just told us that our apartment has its own generators that'll kick in if we lose power - I can't tell you how much that's a relief :)

    1. Hi Mina, we did and it did. Only been living in the US for 15 months and I've experienced 1 earthquake and 2 hurricanes already! So glad to have come off so lightly and thinking of others who have it much worse :)

    1. What a couple of days Sarah! I've nothing to complain about though and so much to be grateful for. It's been like a long holiday with an English friend staying with us, we've drunk wine, eaten lots of goodies, played board games, watched movies, laughed at a Michael McIntyre dvd, caught up on the weekend's X-Factor UK and Strictly Come Dancing, skyped family in Spain and England and camped out in our hallways - Flicky said it's been like the best sleepover ever. Given everything I'm seeing on the news I'm just saying a big thank you that we're not in a very, very different position right now, we have been incredibly lucky when others haven't been so. Much love to you and I'll be in touch soon x

  10. It sounds like you are in a good solid building. Stay safe! My daughter Kaela went to CT to ride out the storm with family friends. They've already lost power but she's in good hands. Hang in there Chrissie!

    1. Hi Cynthia, our building was magnificent, I'll have a whole new tick list for any future apartment I live in to be sure it matches up to this one. Hardly any movement through the winds and our generators - what a bonus. I can see everyone around me is still in the dark, we are so very lucky. I hope your girls are okay too, thinking of you :)

  12. You probably won't be able to get to this for some time, but I hope you guys are doing ok! I'm in upstate, and we've mostly dodged it. I've spent my night watching the Weather Channel in horror. Prayers to you and yours for safety!

    1. Hi Catherine, thank you for your prayers and I hope you are as okay as we are this evening. We did lose the internet but we maintained power thanks to are apartment block's generators so we were able to watch everything unfold on the news too. I am so grateful for how lucky we've been when we are surrounded by such devastation.

I hope you are in the same situation and send you my very best wishes also :)
