A Not So Wonky Roman Stripe Block: My January 2014 NYC Mod Quilt Guild Bee Block

This month's NYC Mod Guild King Bee is Brian and he sent out this absolutely gorgeous package of blue and white fabrics.  The instructions are taken from Block Party: The Modern Quilting Bee - June: Wonky Roman Stripe Block by Kristen Lejnieks.

It's really easy to put this block together, simply joining strip after strip to the other triangular half of the block.

The method's exactly the same as the one I used to create my Roses For A Drama Queen QAYG Quilt just without the batting.

Once you've pieced the strips together you iron a block size template of freezer paper over the fabric (I've drawn in a red dash line so you can see the freezer paper more easily) and cut the block to the perfect size.

Peel away the freezer paper

And there's your block - well two of them actually!

These blocks are 15" square (that's the size of the freezer paper template that Brian included in the package) and there's lots of ways you can place them to create different quilt designs

How crisp, clean and amazing do these blocks look?  That's going to be one fantastic quilt.

So I've made the blocks and think they look great but this is the point where I reread the instructions and realise that I've followed the Traditional Roman Stripe Block design instead of the Wonky Roman Stripe - I was supposed to be 'wonky' in sewing the strips together.  Whoops, I was so busy thinking "this is easy", "this is just like making my Roses For A Drama Queen Quilt", "I'll have this done in no time" and other equally smug thoughts that I sewed all the strips straight and left out the 'wonky' element.  Guess who's come down to earth with a bump? :(

I just hope Brian likes them and that in the overall scheme of the quilt they look perfectly wonky in their straightness.

As always you can check out all the blocks that our Bee make for Brian on my Quilty - Roman Stripe Block Pinterest Board - I'll add more pins as each person in the Bee posts photos of their finished blocks and you can see my NYC Mod Quilt Guild Post here too.

  1. It looks perfect, Chrissie! I'm sure it'll be fine with the other wonkies, and when he puts them together he won't even notice! :)

  2. I like it straight. I think the wonky look is great when using scraps but to cut material wonky and then have wastage,,,,hmmmm

  5. I have that book and much prefer the crispness of the blue and white to the version in the book. A bit of straightness won't go amiss in amongst all that wonkiness either :)

  16. Don't you love it when you think you are smooth sailing and then when you do realize something is not right it is too late! Kinda like when I sew along happily and then realize that my bobbin thread is out and I haven't been sewing at all! DOH! *head smack*

For what it is worth I think your blocks are sooo pretty:)

    1. Drives me crazy when that happens Sara, bad enough on straight stitching but unbearable when it's fmq and you were doing so well with the rhythm and pattern and then it's all interrupted and needs repeating!

  17. I love roman stripes. I never get tired of this block. I have a bunch of roman stripe ideas in my head if I could just sit down and sew it up. :) Happy quilting this week!
