This pattern is an adaptation of my previous Hand Tied Snuggle Quilt pattern. In this version, I'm using 5.5" blocks instead of 6.5", and I've also left off the border, making a 35" square finish otherwise, the process is identical. For this version, I'm also using quilting weight cotton instead of flannels - Curious Dream by Angela Pingel of Cut to Pieces for Windham Fabrics.
To make the Hand Tied Snuggly, you'll need to follow the instructions for my Minky & Flannel Hand Tied Snuggle Quilt pattern available here. The original pattern makes a 47" square quilt, including borders from (49) 6-1/2" squares. Changes to the original instructions necessary to make the 35" Curious Dream version are detailed below.
Hand Tied Snuggly Quilt (35" x 35")
Materials
I've used 21 fabrics from the Curious Dream collection by Angela Pingel for Windham Fabrics for the quilt top, and my backing is sherpa cuddle Minky. The quilt works equally well made from flannel or 100% cotton fabrics, and if sherpa cuddle Minky's not your thing, you can use batting and a cotton backing instead.
Fabrics Requirements
✦ Patchwork Squares - 21 fabrics (flannel or cotton) - 1/4 yd or FQ of each
I've used Curious Dream by Angela Pingel for Windham Fabrics
✦ 2-1/4" OR 2-1/2" Binding - 5/8 yd navy 'Alice' text 42435-10
note: this measurement is exactly right for 2-1/2" binding strips and doesn't allow any cutting excess or shrinkage
✦ Backing - 1 yd sherpa cuddle Minky
note: this measurement allows only 1" wiggle room
OR 1 yd cotton backing with 1 yd batting
Pre-Wash
Pre-washing your fabrics is often considered optional when using 100% cotton, but it is essential if you're using a Minky quilt back. Your cotton quilt top will have some shrinkage, probably minimal, but there will be some. The Minky, however, won't shrink at all when washed, so the cotton must also be at its final size (post-shrinkage) before combining the two materials.
I pre-washed the cotton on a gentle wool wash in my front loading machine. As I used fat quarters and wanted to keep the fraying to an absolute minimum, I placed the FQs in a zipped mesh laundry lingerie bag. I also used a Colour Catcher (Shout in the US/Dylon in the UK) as some dark blue FQs were going in with whites, peach and yellows.
The Colour Catcher did pick up some colour, though not much, but I was glad I'd taken the precaution...
This is how the FQs looked when they came out of the machine.
The fraying wasn't bad at all - there are 21 FQs in that pile, and they all kept their shape. I pressed them dry from wet on the reverse side and, once trimmed, pressed and dry, they looked like new.
Cutting Instructions
You need (49) 5-1/2" squares to make the Curious Dream quilt - here are the fabric code numbers and the number of squares to cut from each fabric.
Binding
2-1/4" or 2-1/2" strips of Navy 'Alice' text 42435-10.
Join the strips to make 150" continuous binding - I've used (9) 2-1/4" strips cut from the fabric length, NOT across the width (at right angles to the text direction). I've blanket stitched with Aurifil 40/2 #2805 Light Turquoise.
Backing
Don't cut the Minky backing at this stage; I'll explain why in the main quilt pattern instructions at the point when we're ready to back the quilt.
Design Layout
This is the design layout for the quilt top showing the placement of the Windham Curious Dream fabrics. Note: I've rotated the direction of some of the green/yellow/blue 'line' fabrics 42431-1/2/3. Angela calls that 'line' design Jabberwocky, and its colour names are parakeet, dandelion and lagoon.
Working With Minky
Notoriously difficult to work with, don't let the Minky backing put you off making this quilt; follow my 5 Step Guide To A Perfect Minky Quilt Back.
Borders
I haven't included borders in this version of the quilt.
Hand Tying The Quilt
Finally, I've hand tied the quilt with #3 Pearl cotton, but in this version, the ties are the centre of each patchwork square rather than at the cross junctions.
Hand tying a quilt is super easy, too, and I'll show you how in this tute.
