Exploring Barcelona, Spain - Oyambre

Exploring Barcelona, Spain - Oyambre by madebyChrissieD.com

While in Spain at the end of October, I met up with my friend Adelaida.  Adelaida is from Barcelona and a few years ago she spent some time living in Manhattan and became a regular shopper and student at The City Quilter and that's how we met.  We hadn't seen each other for about three years but, of course, as soon as I knew I was heading out to Barcelona we arranged to meet up.

We had a wonderful day together with much to catch up on and the best news Adelaida shared is that she's coming to see me in New York in December, can't wait!

Obviously, as quilters, we discussed fabric and she recommended that I stop by Oyambre, a fabric and yarn store just a two streets from my hotel.  The next day I did just that and took lots of pics to share with you too so let's take a look around the store together.

Totally loving this sewing machine cover, I really should do something to make my machine look this good.

Pause for a minute while I tell you how wonderful the staff are.

Let me set the scene: we're in Spain and I don't speak Spanish apart from getting by with "un copa de tinto Rioja" which magically makes a glass of chilled red wine appear; the store staff speak English "un poquito" (just a bit); but that didn't stop us chatting.  Everyone was very welcoming and the owner, Helena, showed me around the store.  There are tables for customers to sit, knit, sew and chat and she introduced me to a group of ladies who shared their knitting projects.  And, can you believe this - just in case I needed help while I was in Spain, Helena even gave me the phone number for her sister, who speaks English well - when did someone in a store last do something like that for you?!!!  They really were just the nicest people :D

Let's continue exploring and take a look at the yarn.

And my purchases...

A couple of 50 cm x 45 cm (19-3/4" x 17-1/2") linen bundles and 4 balls of Adele's Mohair 'Mountain Lake' to make a scarf.

Hadn't had a chance to play with these notions yet - but always on the lookout for different brands of marking pen to try.  The needle threaders were a life saver as I'd forgotten to bring one for on the plane and my metallic embroidery thread was splitting when threading the needle.
