A Self-Indulgent Blog Post
I'm sharing what is quite simply a self-indulgent blog post to show off my gorgeous Grandson, Oliver, who turned one last Monday.
Quite the little model showcasing his Stars & Stripes Vans, a birthday pressie from Aunty Flicky and his Canadian mountie tee, a recent Niagara Falls trip pressie from Glam-ma and Grandad.
Oli obviously has all his Daddy's talents...
...quite the Jack mini-me. I have photos of my son up to all the same things and I feel like I took them only yesterday!
I love Oli's determination and try, try again 'can do, will do' attitude - again just like his Daddy - oh and this pic does actually show one of my quilts - remember the laminate backed picnic playmat? Read more about it here.
And, at the end of his first year I think we've safely established that Oli loves chocolate cake.

The Rockin' Robot Laminate Backed Picnic Playmat
Not long now until my grandson, Oliver, will be with us and son, Jack and Ana have been busy planning and equipping their nursery. A few weeks ago they sent me this pic of Jack, and my daughter, Flicky, painting the room
and when they sent this finished paintwork pic they said they were going with a space theme.
In my stash was this panel - same colours and a space theme - all robots, space ships and rockets - Blue Sky Studio "Rockets and Robots" for Benartex.
Sending back this pic we started discussing what I could make it into - a wall hanging, play mat, picnic blanket - the final consensus a waterproof playmat/picnic blanket - softening the wooden bedroom floor and perfect for outdoor picnics.
The panel wasn't wide enough on its own so I added red rocket fabric borders, also from my stash - Out of this World by jill mcdonald for P&B Textiles.
Once the top was complete I attached fusible batting and free motion quilted it without a backing using Aurifil 40/2 #2770 - Very Light Delft.
The background and borders are stippled while I've framed and outlined each image - you can see the fmq easily here on the batting side.
Once complete I spray basted the batting with Odif 505 temporary fabric adhesive spray and attached a red and white polka dot laminate backing (Riley Blake Designs Pattern C350-80 Dots by The RBD Designers) then bound the playmat with Kona Solid - Jade Green. Finished playmat size 39" x 48".

Oh and here's a couple of robot friends that I couldn't resist buying for Oliver too.
I did the photoshoot before carrying out the part of the process I was dreading - washing the playmat. I had no idea what would happen given it's a quilted top and non-quilted laminate backing.
I'm delighted to report the playmat washed perfectly. Obviously the backing is now only attached to the playmat by the bound edges and no longer firmly attached to the complete top as the temporary spray glue has washed away but that doesn't affect the finished playmat at all. In fact it was better the back was no longer attached as the top crinkled and shrank in the wash - the way quilts do - and the back remained the same size and flat.
I hung the playmat over the shower rail until it was half dry and then I ironed the quilted top (not the laminate side!) twice with a nice warm iron (taking care not to stay too long on one place - didn't want to melt through the back). The quilted top went back to size and completely flat again.
Such a relief - no point in a baby play mat that can't be machine washed!!!
And here's a pic of the washed playmat - can't make it bigger because it's a phone pic and too blurry, it's the pic I sent to Jack and Ana the moment I knew all had gone well, but trust me it's perfect!
I simply can't wait to see Oliver playing on it :D

A Good Snapshot Or A Total Wash Out?

Pics of another Christmas make I haven't shared before or rather snapshots full of memories. I made 3 of these laminated wash bags as gifts for guys and don't you just love this masculine camera laminated fabric? It's Cameras by Michael Miller Fabrics.
Laminated inside and out - perfect for a quick wipe clean
and even a guy can use a pack of man tissues in his travel bag.
Not a total washout even if I say so myself.
Speaking of laminated wash bags and tissue covers, yesterday I taught a class of wonderful ladies at The City Quilter in Manhattan how to make laminated wash bags and tissue covers for themselves. All the ladies were new to sewing zippers, one of the ladies hadn't touched a sewing machine for over 20 years - since she was at school - and no-one had sewn with laminated fabric before.
Students chose to make any size bag, from wash bag to cosmetic bag or even a tiny lipstick/coin change bag - the technique's the same whatever the size and they got to take my detailed written instructions home with them.
It was a really fun day and I think everyone got over their fear of zippers and laminates.
By the end of the day here's what everyone had produced and it was wonderful to see how excited they all were with their handiwork and I was an incredibly proud teacher :D

Packing For Uni - A 'Must Have' Wash Bag
Less than a week to go till Flicky heads off to university at St Andrews, Scotland and we now know exactly where she'll be living, check this out, it's amazing!
It is, however, very tricky fitting your life into 2 suitcases - she's busy wondering how a girl's to manage to take only 16 pairs of shoes; I'm thinking wellies are all she'll need and she's not even taking them, but she is buying a new pair when she gets there!
There're a couple of other essentials that she's made room for in the case: her favourite quilt which is the first quilt I ever made;
and the pillowcases that I made for her earlier this year;
and this week she decided she 'must have' a new wash bag ... so, of course, I obliged.
The laminate is Soul Blossoms Blue Velvet, Trailing Orchid by Amy Butler - it's super soft and incredibly shiny (so lots of reflection in this pics) and the lining is Mini Flamingos by Timeless Treasures
I like to think that she'll think of me every time she uses the bag, but the reality will probably be quite different, as it should be!
