No Bind Baby Quilt - Fall Class In Manhattan

I've got a very busy September lined up starting with a business trip to Phoenix next week ('to do' recommendations welcome), then I'm heading off to Seville for a few weeks in October to meet a very special-to-me young man who's making his first appearance at any moment over the next 4 weeks.

With no time to spare I needed to crack on and finish my November 'No Bind Baby Quilt' class sample ready for display at The City Quilter in the Manhattan quilt store where I'm teaching.  It's a really quick make and my students can look forward to taking home their very own finished version of the quilt at the end of the day.

THE PHOTOSHOOT:

No front or back to this quilt, both sides are equally wonderful.

It's a great way to showcase favourite fabric designs you just can't bear to cut into.

I've couldn't resist these two Cloud9 fabrics when they arrived in the store, they're both from the new Lotus Pond collection by Rae Hoekstra.

Meadow Blossoms (blue)

Lotus Drop (turquoise)

Simple straight line quilting doesn't detract from the main player - the fabric (Aurifil 50/2 thread - White #2024).

My label detail

Finished quilt size - 34.5" x 45" makes this a perfect baby, child or lap quilt - great for gifting.

Couldn't decide which side I preferred for this rolled shot so here's both!

Thanks to those Cloud9 organic fabrics the quilt's super silky soft and snuggly.

    1. I've made his picnic playmat Ruth and I'm just making baskets for his nursery, if there's any fabric left over I think I might make him a quilt. Oliver's got 2 grandmas, his Mum and his Aunt who all quilt so one thing's for sure, he'll never be cold!!!

  2. When you go to Phoenix, check out the MIM - the Musical Instrument Museum. It is fabulous!

  3. This is such a fun little quilt! The simplicity is perfect. It's easy to get caught up in the complicated pattern frenzy...the old KISS method is sometimes best. This is best!

  4. Gorgeous blanket! Those fabrics indeed need to be seen in big pieces for us to appreciate their motif. And the mother can chose the side that fits today's mood...

  5. What a great way to showcase 2 beautiful fabrics. And since it is organic cotton, perfect for babies!
I just finished a project using Lotus pond fabric too. Same here, could not resist the beautiful fabric:)

    1. Popped over to your blog to take a look at your Lotus Pond fabric project - oh my, how fabulous does Momo look in her twirly dress. You've done a stunning job and she is simply adorable. Thanks for dropping by :D

  6. This is just gorgeous; I made one with a stunning piece of cotton from The Netherlands that I wouldn't cut into for all the binding in New England. Pairing it with a tan cashmere and merino wool throw that was exactly the same size and tying it with Perle cotton in purple to match one of the cotton colors made it a really warm and lovely piece that will be with me for ever. The friend who gave me the wool blanket has become space matter and I miss her love and guidance so much.

Thank you for sharing this beauty with us. I love the quilting too.

  10. The quilting is so perfect for these fabrics, and I love the no-binding concept. I've done pillowcase bindings on a few quilts, and I love the way they turn out. Congrats on the new special man! Hope his arrival goes smoothly!

  12. I luv simple! Nice pics. Thank you. I live in Phoenix...Avondale actually. It's still pretty hot out...but I suppose an early morning or evening hike of Squaw Peak would be nice if you are into that sort of thing.

    1. Googled Squaw Peak and it really appeals, just put off slightly by the temps at the moment. I'll have to see how the timings of our business meetings go and if we can work around them, thanks for telling me about it :D

    2. Nor sure what part of town you'll be in or what kind of food you like, but two of my favorite affordable places to eat are Oregano's (Italian) and Popo's(Mexican) and my fave, not-so-affordable is Mastro's Ocean Club (seafood). There are a few Oregano's and Popo's in the valley, but only 1 Mastro's OC. They all have good vegetarian dishes if you are not a carnivore.

    1. Lol that's one long trip for my quilting class Dawn. Thanks for your lovely comment about the photos - my Art and Design background includes digital and dark room photography so maybe I've got an unfair advantage on the photo front! :D

  17. Great quilt: the "no-binding" appeals to me, no end! Love the fabrics.

  18. I bought 10 of the 12 Lotus Pond designs, and I'm having a hard time taking a rotary blade to them, too. I used two in a simple tote bag, and I have some of the orange frogs set aside for a little boy's rail fence quilt. I love your whole-cloth quilt! It truly lets the fabric be the star here.

  19. Sometimes it's hard to forget that you don't have to actually cut up fabric to make a quilt! That floral on the blue background is so pretty! I definitely wouldn't want to cut it up either!

    1. I love wholecloth quilts - pretty much all the baby quilts I sell are wholecloth, those prints are so attractive all on their own without getting fussy and detracting with complicated pattern designs, they also look really crisp and modern which non-quilting Mums are attracted to. :D
