Kate Stiassni - 'Spaces in Between': Contemporary Textile NYC Exhibition

The fourth month into my job at The City Quilter in Manhattan - and I'm still loving it.  An update is that I'm also now one of two Bernina Sales Assistants in the store and have increased my days to three a week.  If you didn't catch my earlier posts you can read all about the store here and then catch up on my 'golden ticket' job news here :)

About time I shared a look at the current exhibition at The Art Quilt Gallery:

'Spaces in Between' by Kate Stiassni: 10 September - 19 October 2013

Kate is a textile artist and quiltmaker and you can read more about her here on her website.
This is her Artist's Statement from The Art Quilt Gallery exhibition:

"The choice of working with textiles came very naturally to me.  I love the supple and tactile nature of fabric and its ability to absorb rich colors.  I strive to express energy and movement within my work.  Yet I also try to create spaces that allow the eye to pause or pivot in its journey.
I usually begin with a simple idea, arranging and constructing (or deconstructing) abstract forms into patterns until I feel a harmonic tension or unity.  Color also comes into play, and I choose my palette from hand-dyed fabrics that provide me with a wide range of values.  I think of my process as being very intuitive, but when it's time to join the pieces together, each stitch is made with thoughtful intent, fastening the layers and adding textural depth.  I'm a firm believer that every cut, line and stitched seam leads somewhere, so I try to remain open to the process, to change and variation, and to exploring both traditional and modern techniques.
I am profoundly grateful to several amazing quilters who have added the surface stitching to a number of my quilts - Julia Graziano and Katie Troyer.  Many of the fabrics I use are hand-dyed by Lisa Reber."

All works are hand dyed fabrics, machine pieced and quilted apart from 'Theme and Variations II' and 'Seeing Double'.

For those who can't drop in then, I hope my photos have inspired you as much as seeing the quilts has inspired me :)

    1. Even longer now Kati, think we'll be doing January Sales shopping together at this rate!!! I really loved these quilts, they were very much 'my thing' and totally inspiring. I keep saying it but I really must start bringing my art background into my own quilts more! :D
