Santa Sack Tute - Christmas In July 2015


Welcome to day 1 of the Christmas in July Blog Hop; as always, let me start with a great big "hi" to my regular readers and a huge welcome to anyone visiting for the first time from the Benartex blog Sew in Love {with Fabric}.


Today, you'll find my Santa Sack tutorial at the Benartex blog Sew in Love {with Fabric}. The Christmas in July Blog Hop continues to Tuesday, 28 July, with a new project tute and giveaway each weekday (not Sat and Sun).  

Want To Make Your Own Santa Sack With Different Fabric And Another Size?
The instructions in my tute over at Sew in Love {with Fabric} are to make a Santa Sack from the Happy Holidays Snowmen fabric collection by Michele D'Amore for Benartex Fabrics precisely the same as mine. Still, you can make my Santa Sack using any Christmas fabric and size. To make one to your own measurements, cut 4 pieces of fabric to your desired size (don't forget to add 1/2" seam allowance to the length and width) and 2 pieces of batting cut to the same size; you'll also need 4 border fabrics cut 6-1/2" x the width of your main fabric. Follow the tute instructions as usual and quilt and/or embellish to suit.

Trialling Threads and Embellishments

My thread of choice is Aurifil; all the threads I've used for this project are 50/2 wt cotton, and here's a list of the colours:

Bright Orange #1133 (not in the picture)
Light Sand #2000
White #2024
Wine #2260
Black #2692
Light Turquoise #2805
Fern Green #2888
Medium Turquoise #4182

I also trialled a handful of beads but finally decided against embellishments.


Free Motion Quilting
When I'm free-motion quilting, I simultaneously quilt all sections of one colour to speed things up. I fasten my ends for one section and then drag my threads over to the next section - if you try this method, just make sure there's enough length between the two areas of stitching to cut, knot and bury your threads later by cutting the dragged thread lengths at the halfway point. I ensure enough length in my dragged threads so the fabric can remain flat and not bunch up. You can see how I drag the thread in the photo below.

    Our tradition is having Christmas on Christmas eve. The whole family comes to a buffet dinner that is composed of one item requested from each family member. Sometimes what's on the table is a strange combination such as barbeque lil smokies, pizza, chicken nuggets, deviled eggs and jell salad but it's our tradition. and everyone is happy. After dinner we open gifts and anyone that stays over night is sure to find a gift from Santa when they wake up the next morning. Rina

    We had a Christmas tradition when my girls were growing up; a special way of opening presents when the gifts were identical. We would have them sit on the floor, back to back, and open the gift. But they couldn't say any words and couldn't turn around until each had the gift unwrapped. No spoiling the surprise this way!

    We always have hot chocolate in my special mugs, all the candles in the room lit along with the tree...no electrical lights! And of course we must remain in our PJ's until all presents are opened. Then we have a wonderful breakfast.

    It has become a tradition for me to give lots of quilts as Christmas gifts! The last few years I make a big pile of them and have the family members choose numbers that determine the "quilt picking order". It's quite a process for each person to take their turn and choose the quilt they want to keep.

    My mom started the Christmas tradition of having a yummy smorgasbord of food each Christmas Eve following church services. I'm sure it's not so unique, but it is something I've carried on since she passed away 5 years ago. I even use many of her recipes.

    Hi Crissie...my tradition is to wait til the last minute...Christmas Eve ... to wrap presents.. but seriously..we gather on Christmas Eve to exchange gifts then drive out to a subdivision that decorates for the holiday.

    I make Chrismas "Boxes" instead of stockings for all my kids and grandkids. I put in all kinds of dollar store stuff and treats. The big kids love them just as much as the little ones. :)

    The tradition my family has had is to visit the local Christmas Tree Farm each year. This is the same tree farm I have gone to since I was a baby myself and my own children have gone to their entire lives. Now my children are taking their children to the same tree farm. The same family has owned the farm all those years as well, and is now in its 4th generation running the farm with their children now helping. I have not gone there in the past few years and hope this year to get back to going because I really miss it. It has been such a long standing tradition for myself and one that really reminds me of my parents who are both gone now.

    This comment also failed to show up, even though my last four did fine. Shrug. One of our family traditions at Christmas is to put an apple and orange in the toe of the stocking. This comes from an older age when fruit was hard to come by in Winter and was quite expensive. It was really a treat! I like being reminded that we should be thankful for what we have now. I also like knowing that I am doing something my grandparents and parents did before me. Ho, ho, ho! I'm ready! I love Christmas!

    One of my favorite Christmas Traditions is decorating the tree. I do not know how many years this has been going on, but a few days after Thanksgiving Mom and I, plus various individuals who happen to want to join in or are there, pull out all of the Christmas decoration boxes and so forth. We then set up the tree, put on a Christmas show or music and with my father sitting in his recliner (he is the supervisor and expert...LOL) we spend hours getting the tree decorated. It is just a fabulous fun time for all of us!
