What's A Selvedge? - Fort Worth Fabric Studio {Blog} Guest Post

Back in August my What's A Selvedge? blog post caught the eye of Jodie and Lyndsey over at Fort Worth Fabric Studio and they asked if they could share my post with readers of their own Fort Worth Fabric Studio {Blog}.

I was happy to oblige so do pop over to their blog today and take a look at my post and at all the wonderful fabric they sell too.

A Self-Indulgent Blog Post

I'm sharing what is quite simply a self-indulgent blog post to show off my gorgeous Grandson, Oliver, who turned one last Monday.

Quite the little model showcasing his Stars & Stripes Vans, a birthday pressie from Aunty Flicky and his Canadian mountie tee, a recent Niagara Falls trip pressie from Glam-ma and Grandad.

Oli obviously has all his Daddy's talents...

...quite the Jack mini-me. I have photos of my son up to all the same things and I feel like I took them only yesterday!

I love Oli's determination and try, try again 'can do, will do' attitude - again just like his Daddy - oh and this pic does actually show one of my quilts - remember the laminate backed picnic playmat?  Read more about it here.

And, at the end of his first year I think we've safely established that Oli loves chocolate cake.

Happy First Birthday Oli xxx

Self indulgence over, thanks for humouring me :D

A Pencil Case Book Cover

After finishing an upcoming project I've been working on for Fort Worth Fabric Studio {Blog} I had some scraps left over from this gorgeous fabric collection Skopelos by Katerina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics.  Not wanting them to go to waste I made them into a larger piece of fabric using my 'How To Make Selvedge Fabric' method mixing in the scraps alongside the left over selvedges.

This is how the made fabric looked before I quilted it into place.  I like to trial thread colours by unravelling a length of thread and placing it over all the different fabrics in a single length to see how it looks against each - if you enlarge the picture below you can just about see what I mean.  Looking at the full thread spool doesn't show you how the colour will really work for you - after all your quilted line will only be one thread not hundreds side by side unless you're creating satin stitch so this is my preferred method.  This time I've chosen the thread on the right, a variegated Aurifil 50/2 4663 - Baby Blue Eyes.

When I'd quilted the fabric I made it into a book cover and popped a zipper into the outside front cover to create a pencil case.

Exploring Portland OR - Cool Cottons

We're coming to the end of our tour of Seattle and Portland and it's almost time to get on a plane home but before we leave we've got to make one more stop at another fabric shop we've heard great things about.

oh my goodness how cute is the building?
I was very excited to go inside and take a closer look and stepping in at the front door didn't disappoint.

I was welcomed warmly by Marie and we passed quite some time sharing stories and getting to know each other before I even started shopping.  While we were chatting I spotted Cool Cottons Row by Row above Marie's head, it's super simple but visually really pleasing and a great stand alone piece too.  Portland OR's Annual Precipitation - I think it's one of my favourite Row by Rows ever.

Time to take a proper look around Cool Cottons which has the whole ground floor of this beautiful building.

Fabrics are organised mainly by colour, I love it, it makes pulling fabrics super easy though some are by collection too.

There's patterns, notions, fusibles, etc in the light-filled room at the very back of the store.

This section has those imported Japanese fabrics we love, you know the ones Echino, etc.

Solids - yes, please.

This unit is stunning and perfect for displaying these small bolts and more.

Take in this bay full of light and full of fabric, yep this store is just perfect.

I've been really lucky to have met many wonderful people on this trip and meeting and chatting with Marie was the perfect ending.

I bought a little fabric too, always on the look out for stash staples.

If you're visiting Portland put Cool Cottons on your 'must do' list and say 'hi' to Marie for me.
